Splash AR / Los Angeles / Feb, 2023 / 45sec.

“Splash" is a site specific mobile AR installation exploring my childhood trauma in male restrooms. I was terrified by standing in front of other males peeing. So I had to lock myself in the separate rooms to pee. Every time I heard the flushing noise of the toilet I would get nervous. In other to visualize this feelings, I did a performance art based on this feeling in front of my iPad’s front camera and imported the performance footage into the 3D scanner APP in iPad and generated this digital sculpture. Then I brought this sculpture into real world by utilizing Reality Composer software.

Methods: 3D scanner, Reality Composer, iPad.

Flush Site Projection / Los Angeles USC SCI 3rd Floor Male Restroom / Feb, 2023 / 2min 23sec.

“Flush" is a site specific cinematic projection combined with performance art, exploring my childhood trauma in male restrooms.

The inspiration of this work is my childhood trauma. At that time, I wish I could hide inside the hole of the toilet and be flushed away by the water whenever I locked myself inside the separate rooms of the male restrooms. I couldn't bare the noise in the male restrooms especially when people coughing, washing their hands, and chatting with each other loudly.

I projected the naked image of myself onto the bottom of the toilet in male restrooms. Also I pushed the button of the toilet to flush myself away as a performance. Since it’s a projected image, it couldn’t be really flushed away by the water. During this process, I want to express the vulnerability of my identities when facing towards the invisible violence amid the patriarchal society. The flushing water represents a violence to break the body into pieces, and the tinny image of my naked body represents my fragile and soft parts.

I invited the audience to lock themselves in this toilet room, viewing this piece and listening to the noise I made outside of the room. I created an immersive environment for them to feel the similar tension, anxiety, and fear during that certain period of time of my childhood.

Snail Cinematic Object Installation / Los Angeles USC SCA 1st Floor Gallery / March, 2023 / 4min.

“Snail" is a cinematic object installation exploring the soft part of my self identities and the relationship between my intuitive embody consciousness and the social identities depressing myself.

I projected my naked self image onto a stack of all my clothes, underwear, socks, paints etc. The stack of clothes like a shell of a snail and also a stone on my body, giving me both shelter and pressure at the same time. I also did a slow movement performance to express my emotions. In terms of the sound part, I recorded my breathing sound and added it to the soundtrack, matching the movements of my body. I also utilized the cracks on the concrete floor to give a tactile feelings to the skin image of my body, giving more grounded and dimensional feelings to the audience.

My intension of this work is to give the audience a dream feeling, inviting them to feel the softness and my struggles embedded in my daily routines.
